Do not underestimate the threats facing your company. Coordination with Building Management and Office Managers is critical when it comes to defending your Computer Network. Grandmothers may not know how to hack the virtual world, but they are not without their resources.
Mona Shaw of Bristow, Virginia certainly showed offer her elite haxor skillz (sic) when she used a hammer to hack into Comcast’s Customer Support Department. No matter how strong you think your CND defenses are, they can’t stop a hammer.
The low-tech approach to CND always needs to be considered when building defenses. While working at NFR Security, the signature team enjoyed testing the building’s physical defenses. There were nice glass doors for the main entrance. Through the doors, you could see the motion sensor for the magnetic security lock. A simple length of wire and a piece of paper was enough to fool the sensor into unlocking the door. Slide the two through the door, wave, and voila – instant access to the office.
It is important to have a security plan that covers all avenues of approach; it is critical that this plan is tested. Many companies have plans and polices, but few have actually tested them. Get out there and test your plan, better yet hire an independent third party to test the plan. Lomin Security offers a service to test and audit these plans. We use hammers, bits of string and paper along with all our hacker knowledge to test these plans. Regardless, you need to make certain that the plan is updated to adequately mitigate practical threats found through your tests.
Don’t let grandma hack your network.
